HYDERABAD: Ganesh idol immersion turned tragic on Monday as at least 25 revellers died in various parts of the state. While Krishna district alone accounted for eight deaths, three degree students met a watery grave in a tank in Kadapa district.

The break-up is: Krishna 8, Khammam, East Godavari, Kadapa 3 each, Nalgonda, Adilabad, Guntur 2 each, while Warangal and Nizamabad reported one death each.

In East Godavari, three persons drowned in Ambajipet mandal, two youths died in a road accident while taking the idol in a tractor in PC Palle in Nalgonda district.

Six youths drowned in Kompalle tank near Gannavaram in Krishna district while taking part in the immersion. The victims were part of a group of 30 from Gollanapalle village who came on a tractor to immerse the idol. Locals retrieved the bodies of the six youths around 7 pm.

Three degree students drowned in Pullam cheruvu in Pullampeta mandal in Kadapa district when they ventured into the canal for immersion. Bodies of Suresh, Naresh and Bhaskar, aged 20, were recovered and sent for autopsy. Two people got drowned in Mandamarri mandal in Adilabad district during idol immersion. A youth Kurma Gangadhar, 24, drowned in the water tank while immersing idol near Ghanpur village in Dichpalli mandal in Nizamabad in the evening.

Meanwhile, two SSC students — Rajiv and Ravi — were reportedly washed away in the temple town of Bhadrachalam during immersion. In another incident, two persons were washed away in a gushing stream near Penuganchiprolu in Krishna district.
