FIRST KEYNOTE ANNOUNCED

Dr Peter Wernicki The conference organisers have chosen USLA Medical Advisor and ILS Medical Committee member, Dr Peter Wernicki’s presentation, as the first keynote address to be announced. Dr Wernicki will address the recent evaluation of current lifesaving standards and strategies by the US Lifeguard Standards Coalition, via a paper he co-authored with David Markenson (American Red Cross) and Gerald DeMers (YMCA of USA) titled, Evidence Based Standards in Lifesaving: The Conclusions of the US Lifeguard Standards Coalition.

Lifesaving programs and organisations throughout the world often operate under standards and guidelines developed over the years by trial and error, expert opinion, tradition, and inference from related fields. However, few standards have been based upon objective experimentation and research. The United States Lifeguard Standards Coalition - a partnership formed between the United States Lifesaving Association, the American Red Cross, and the YMCA of the USA - was established to conduct that missing experimentation and research. The coalition’s process represents the most comprehensive evidence based review of lifesaving and associated literature ever performed and their outcomes are certain to have relevance for lifesaving worldwide.

The organisers found the presentation to be an excellent paper that is cross cutting in nature and spans the key themes of research, policy and practice. Further keynote presentations will be announced in coming weeks.
