Keynote Address
Drowning Prevention: Challenges and prospects for global progress – Dr David Meddings, World Health Organization
The WCDP organising committee is pleased to announce that Dr David Meddings from the World Health Organization will present a keynote address at the World Conference on Drowning Prevention.
Dr Meddings acknowledges that drowning is a major global health challenge and one where interventions must respond to the child mortality and morbidity epidemiology at an individual country level.
Titled: ‘Drowning Prevention: Challenges and prospects for global progress’, Dr Meddings will address the challenges faced by the drowning prevention field in creating intervention programs around what is a complex issue that has a history of policy and research neglect and one that has significant risk factor differences compared to high-income countries.
Dr Meddings will also examine opportunities for sustaining global interest in drowning prevention, the scaling up of interventions, research collaborations and the role of institutions and frameworks.
Dr Meddings works for the WHO’s Department of Violence and Injury Prevention and Disability.
Theme in Focus – Emergency Response and Medical
The Emergency Response and Medical stream will cover a diverse range of issues that will be of interest to medical professionals, medical researchers and all those working or volunteering in this field. It will be monitored by the International Life Saving Federation’s Medical Committee.

Impact of alcohol and drug abuse on drowning
This stream will be of particular interest to medical professionals working across Asia, and for those working in urban and rural environments where drowning places a significant burden on the health system.
