Bac My An (China Beach)

Bac My An (or what the tourists refer to as China Beach) is located 7km southeast of Danang city. The long strip of beach features a wide range of accommodation options across the road, with the Furama resort at the far end.

This beach offers views of Hai Van Pass, Son Tra Peninsula and its giant Buddha statue. On a clear day it is also possible to see out to the east to Cham Island.

One of the best thing about Bac My An, are the restaurants set up on the sand with chairs, tables, sunbeds and sunshades. Here you can order fresh seafood and cold beer and softdrinks for cheap prices. There are also roaming vendors that can sell you anything from sunglasses and cigarettes to freshly prepared Vietnamese dishes, crispy bread snacks, french style baguettes with delicious fillings (banh my) and peanuts.

As the beach faces the east, it is best to be up early to try and catch the spectacular sun rises over the beach and the peninsula. There are sometimes beautiful colours produced around dusk as well. Another reason to be up early is to take a look (or take part in!) all the pre-work activity. Many Vietnamese in the warmer months will flock to the beach to take part in an early morning swim, paddle, run or even yoga on the beach. Many of those that cannot swim will go into the water with a home made flotation device strapped to them.

Observing the fishing trade is also an interesting part of any trip to the beach in Danang. There are the traditional circular fishing boats to take a look at. Try to catch these in action as the skill and strength it takes to steer them is quite extraordinary. The giant nets used to haul in fish along the beach, are also a sight to behold.
