Hai Van Pass or ‘Cloudy Pass’ as the Vietnamese refer to it, is the highest pass in the country and the last spur of the Truong Son Mountain Range that reaches to the sea. It was described by a Vietnamese scholar in the 17th century as if Hai Van had its foot standing in the sea and its summit covered with clouds. The pass is also a borderline between the provinces of Thuan Hoa and Quang Nam.
On the summit of Hai Van pass, one can enjoy a panoramic view of Danang city, Tien Sa sea port, Son Tra peninsula and the long white sandy beaches and bay surrounding Danang.
On the top of the pass are the vestiges of a gateway that is now covered with moss. This gateway facing towards Thua Thien province is inscribed with the words “Hai Van gate” and the other gate which looks down on the province of Quang Nam says “the most grandiose gateway in the world”.
The best way to experience the pass is to take a hire car or taxi and enjoy the view at the summit.
