One of the best things to do when the weather is warm in Danang is to head down to My Khe (China) Beach and enjoy some fresh seafood prepared for you right on the sand. There are a multitude of restaurants in a strip along the main beach road, but the pick for us is Loc Chau, located opposite the Tourane Hotel.
Seating is on plastic chairs or beach chairs on the sand and under shelter in the umbrella covered eating areas. There are exquisite views of the giant Buddha statue on Son Tra Peninsula, as well as the picturesque peninsula itself. On a clear day you can also see down the coast almost to Hoi An, as well as out to sea to Cham Island.
Excellent, fresh seafood is the order of the day at these venues, with steamed clams served with lemongrass, ginger and chilli, grilled fish served with fresh tomato sauce and the shrimps grilled on the BBQ are highly recommended dishes from Loc Chau.
For side dish options, there is excellent fried rice, steamed vegetables and rice and clam soup. The drinks menu is quite basic, with soft drinks and local beers.
There is little English spoken amongst the staff and on the menu, but many tourists make do with pointing and assistance from locals dining at the same establishment. Any minor communication difficulties are worth the trouble for the food and location.
Delicious snacks such as salads and crispy bread snacks, peanuts and freshly prepared fruit can also be purchased from roaming vendors and eaten at these restaurants.
Due to the proximity to the beach, be sure to be on the lookout for high tide!
