Time needed: Half day
Five miles (8km) south of Danang, a cluster of five hills is known as Marble Mountains or “Mountains of the Five Elements”. These peaks are referred to as water, gold, wood, fire and earth. ‘Water’ is the largest and has a number of grottos and statues. Mysterious caves within the mountains also conceal elaborate altars dedicated to Buddha, Bodhisattvas and the different genies of local folklore.
The Marble Mountains, also referred to as Ngu Hanh Son or Mountains of the Five Elements, consist of five marble mountains. The mountains also provide a valuable source of red, white and blue-green marble, and at the foot of the mountain, skilled marble carvers chisel out an interesting variety of object art which make ideal souvenirs.
The north of the region is the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), the old border between North and South Vietnam, which saw some of the fiercest fighting of the American (Vietnam) war.
Marble Mountain is open from 7am to 5pm daily, with a ticket to enter the mountain costing you around 15,000VND.
Upon entering and climbing the mountain you can enjoy exploring Buddhist temples, caves and grottos. Torches are provided at the entrance to the caves. Lookouts are dotted along the path and there are spectacular views from the top of the mountain.
The climb could be classified as medium to steep, up stairs, so wear appropriate enclosed footwear and go early in the morning if the day is likely to be hot. It is not recommended to go when it is raining as stairs can become slippery.
How to get there: Take a taxi or private car 8kms along the beach highway and take the turn off to Marble Mountain.
